BPCL hikes petrol prices by Rs. 2.96; IOC, HPCL to follow suit

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on Tuesday hiked petrol prices by about Rs. 2.96 a litre effective midnight tonight, and other state-owned oil companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) will follow suit on Wednesday.
The Oil Ministry on Tuesday gave the three companies a go-ahead to raise petrol prices after international crude oil prices touched $90 per barrel.
BPCL, the second largest fuel retailer in the country, took the lead to raise petrol prices by Rs. 2.96 a litre to Rs. 55.87 per litre in Delhi, sources privy to the decision said.
IOC, the largest fuel retailer in the country, and the HPCL will do the same by an equal measure on Wednesday, sources said.
State-run oil companies are taking turns to increase prices so that they are not accused of acting as a cartel in revising the price of a commodity which has been freed from government control.
Sources added that the three are losing about Rs. 4.17 per litre on selling petrol below import cost.
Sources said a Rs. 2 per litre hike in diesel prices is on the agenda of an Empowered Group of Ministers headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee when it meets on December 22. The oil firms are losing Rs. 5.40 per litre on selling diesel below import cost, sources said.
Even though the government had decontrolled petrol prices in June, State-run retailers continue to informally consult the oil ministry before revising the rates.
On November 9, they raised petrol prices by Rs. 0.32 per litre to Rs. 52.91 a litre in Delhi.
IOC, BPCL and HPCL have revised rates only four times since June 26 when petrol price was deregulated, while crude oil has jumped from $73-74 per barrel at that time to $90 a barrel now, sources said.
After today’s increase, petrol prices have gone up by Rs. 4.44 a litre since deregulation.
The basket of crude oil India buys was at $ 89.34 per barrel on Monday. It has averaged $ 88.47 per barrel in December as against about $ 79 a barrel at the time of last hike in petrol price on November 9.
If prices are not revised, IOC, BPCL and HPCL are likely to end the fiscal with close to Rs. 67,000 crore revenue loss on sale of diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene below cost.
The oil retailers lose Rs. 272.19 on the sale of every 14.2 kg LPG cylinder and Rs. 17.72 per litre of kerosene.

UP village elects HIV+ve woman to block panel to fight callous hospital

At a time when neglect and social ostracism for HIV-positive people are rife, a village in Uttar Pradesh has rallied around an HIV-positive woman. Praveen Devi (30), a resident of Tuksan village in Hathras, has been elected to the local block development committee so she can battle a private hospital in Aligarh, where she allegedly contracted the infection through a blood transfusion.

The people voted for her even though she never came out for canvassing. “We never cared what she will do for the village, we just wanted her to win the election to fight her own battle,” said Dinesh Chowdhary, a villager.

“We hoped that after winning, she may get support to fight her case. No one listens to the common man,” said Mukesh Kumar, the pradhan of Tuksan.

Before Praveen was declared elected on October 31, the Health Department authorities did not listen to her. Now things have started moving, with the intervention of state Power minister Ramveer Upadhyay. “I have asked the Aligarh Commissioner to look into the matter,” said Upadhyay. Aligarh’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Uma Kant Gupta has formed a three-member committee to probe the issue.

Indian (Malayalee) hurdler Joseph Abraham wins gold

Indian hurdler Abraham may be a pocket-sized athlete,  but he is a dynamo  on the tracks... he proved just that by clinching gold yesterday Joseph Abraham is definitely not built like an athlete. At just a little over 5 ft,he was the shortest in the line-up of the remaining seven taller and more accomplished runners in the men's 400m hurdles final of the Asian Games yesterday.
Joseph Abraham is all smiles after becoming the first India
athlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. pic/AFPThe top four finishers
of the 400m men's hurdles at the last Asian Games in Doha were alongside
Abraham, dwarfing him with their height that ranged from 5ft 6inches to 6 ft
5
inches. Japan's Kenji Narisako, China's Yan Meng, Japan's Naohiro Kawakita and Kazakhstan's Yevgeniy Meleshenko had finished in
that order exactly
four years ago, with Abraham nowhere near them then. However
he not only
went above them all, but did so in fine fashion leading the race
almost
from
the half-way mark to the finish. He even created history in the
bargain by
becoming the first men's athletic gold medallist in the Asian
Games.While
talking to MiD DAY
about being the shortest in
yesterday's line-up, the 29-year-old Kottayam athlete said:
"Not only in this
line-up,
I'm the shortest in Asia in the event. But it
doesn't matter.
World No 1 400m
hurdler Bershawn
Jackson too is of the same height as
me, so height is no problem," he said. Just
for the record, American Bershawn Jackson is
a good
5ft 8in while Joseph
looks barely 5ft 4in, but that's not what
mattered last
night.Also, the fact
that Japan's defending champion Narisako was in the
line-up, didn't matter to
Abraham. "I've been watching and running
alongside
him for sometime now. Even in
last year's Asian Championships
I was not too
far behind him. And then after I
ran my heat and I saw him
running his heat,
I was even more confident of beating
him in the final.
I was sure I'd win
some medal, but my coach Rajinder Singh told me 'if
you have to get a
medal then let it be gold'," said Abraham, who clocked his
season's best
of
49.96 to clinch gold. A thigh injury had forced Abraham to miss
the
Beijing
Olympics, but London Games is all that's on his mind right now. "I
should
not be over-confident. I must now focus on the 2012 London
Olympics," he
said.
